jQuery 1.8.3 Released

Posted on by

Woo hoo, Thanksgiving arrived early this year! jQuery 1.8.3 is available for download. You can get it here:

We’ve notified the Google and Microsoft CDNs as well; we trust they will endeavor to post these files tout de suite. The complete change log for jQuery 1.8.3 is below. It’s a rather modest list, but we did nail a few important bugs and regressions.

The team is already hard at work on jQuery 1.9 and would like to squash as many bugs as possible. To report a problem, please post a bug report and be sure to include a test case from jsfiddle.net or jsbin.com. Also try our work-in-progress build at http://code.jquery.com/jquery-git.js to see if it’s already fixed.

Many thanks to the patch contributors for this version; ye shall know them by their GitHub handles: gnarf37, timmywil, gibson042, rwldrn, joyvuu-dave, jaubourg, staabm, and sindresorhus. In addition, we thank all the community members who took the time to contribute quality bug reports with test cases. Your initial groundwork makes it possible for us to find and fix bugs.

I noticed your home page and the download page still provide jQuery 1.8.2 – will that be updated to 1.8.3 as well? I know there’s download links in this post but not everyone would read the blog post. Are you waiting for the CDNs before you post the new version in general?

  3. It’s always nice to see when new versions with features and bugfixes come up. But IMO think you should all invert some time on the plugins page. It’s killing the comunity. 2 months with no commits. No official news. I don’t think version 1.9 is more important than that.

Love jQuery! keep up the hard work

It seems like the overarching jQuery development team is spread a bit thin, not only having jQuery, but jQuery UI, and the somewhat more recent jQuery Mobile.

@Qcho – I agree that some kind of progress on the plugins site is really important at this point. It’s been cast aside for quite some time now, though I also appreciate how busy the jQuery team is on their many projects. So, jQuery team, please shift some focus to the plugins site…

This is a very good news: a more stable version of jQuery is always appreciated. By the way, why the site says that jQuery minified is 32 KBytes? I downloaded it and it’s 92 KB…

    @System Crasher

That size is the gzipped and minified size. When you download the file and check the size that’s only the minified size. If you enable gzipping on your webserver it will be compressed even further before a client machine downloads it.

  9. Wow how did I miss this. I’ll be updating the version used in all of web development sites to this newest version. Hopefully nothing breaks!

Would be really helpful if you updated the documentation page to include a link to the most current blog post about new releases from the sidebar. Right now, the sidebar still links to “What’s new in 1.7” which is obviously WAY out of date. Can you update that link so it points to “What’s new in 1.8” and also, to this blog post for specifics about the 1.8.3 release?

Also, FYI: I tried to sign up for the forums to ask this question, and the captcha isn’t working, so there’s no way to sign up.

  12. I am getting below message since we upgraded our Jquery version from 1.3 to 1.8.3. Issue is onlu in IE8. Site works very well in IE9,Chrome,Fire Fox.

    Stop running this script?

A script on this page is causing your web browser to run slowely.
If it continues to run, your computer might become unresponsive

Request your feedback on this issue. It seems that Jquery 1.8.3 is not all that good with Internet Explorer 8
    Thanks & Regards,

I tried jquery-1.8.1.min.js in my site along with bootstrap. The checkboxes and dropdowns are responding slowly. When I replace jquery-1.8.1.min.js with version 1.8.3 it is responding fine.Is there any bug in version 1.8.1 regarding checkboxes and dropdowns?

  14. Congrats on the new version of jQuery. On an unrelated note I noticed the styling of the “leave a reply” box is broken at the bottom of this page. You may want to set the display property of the textarea to “block”.

    Cheers!

    jQuery rocks
