Blog » jQuery, Microsoft, and Nokia
Posted September 28th, 2008 by John ResigWe have two pieces of fantastic, albeit serendipitous, news today: Both Microsoft and Nokia are taking the major step of adopting jQuery as part of their official application development platform. Not only will they be using it for their corporate development but they will be providing it as a core piece of their platform for developers to build with.
Microsoft is looking to make jQuery part of their official development platform. Their JavaScript offering today includes the ASP.NET Ajax Framework and they’re looking to expand it with the use of jQuery. This means that jQuery will be distributed with Visual Studio (which will include jQuery intellisense, snippets, examples, and documentation).
Additionally Microsoft will be developing additional controls, or widgets, to run on top of jQuery that will be easily deployable within your .NET applications. jQuery helpers will also be included in the server-side portion of .NET development (in addition to the existing helpers) providing complementary functions to existing ASP.NET AJAX capabilities.
Nokia is looking to use jQuery to develop applications for their WebKit-based Web Run-Time. The run-time is a stripped-down browser rendering engine that allows for easy, but powerful, application development. This means that jQuery will be distributed on all Nokia phones that include the web run-time.
To start Nokia will be moving a number of their applications to work on the run-time (such as Maps) and building them using jQuery. jQuery will become part of their widget development platform, meaning that any developer will be able to use jQuery in the construction of widgets for Nokia phones.
Microsoft and Nokia aren’t looking to make any modifications to jQuery (both in the form of code or licensing) - they simply wish to promote its use as-is. They’ve recognized its position as the most popular JavaScript library and wish to see its growth and popularity continue to flourish.
In fact their developers will begin to help contribute back to the jQuery project by proposing patches, submitting test cases, and providing comprehensive testing against their runtimes. As with any contribution that comes in to the jQuery project it’ll be closely analyzed, reviewed, and accepted or rejected, based upon its merits, by the jQuery development team - no free ride will be given.
A significant level of testing will be added to the project in this respect. The jQuery test suite is already integrated into the test suites of Mozilla and Opera and this move will see a significant level of extra testing being done on Internet Explorer and WebKit - above-and-beyond what is already done by the jQuery team.
The whole jQuery team is quite excited by these prospects and wishes to take this opportunity to welcome both companies to the jQuery community. It’s phenomenal to see these two, major, corporations take the large step of using jQuery as a base for their, and their developers, future development. They will join a long list of happy jQuery users, including Google, Intel, IBM, Intuit, Reuters, and many others.
Update: Blogs posts by Scott Guthrie and Scott Hanselman, both at Microsoft, have posts on the subject matter from their perspective.

@John Resig: I would suggest that you keep a watchful eye on Microshit because they have a bad habit of acting like they’re supporting some de facto standard, then they tweak it so that it becomes proprietary, and call it their own, then the real thing gets destroyed. I love jQuery, and would hate to see it go the way of so many other technologies/standards that they supposedly support. Keep up the great work!

[…] jQuery now officially part of the .NET developer’s toolbox You may have read that from John Resig or Scott Guthrie. I’m very excited to announce that Microsoft has decided to ship, adopt and support using jQuery on top of ASP.NET. This may come as a surprise to some of you but I hope you’ll agree with me that it makes total sense. jQuery is a fantastic JavaScript library that focuses on DOM querying and manipulation, whereas the Microsoft Ajax Library focuses on building reusable components and interacting with ASP.NET web services. A lot has been written already on this new partnership so I’ll just go ahead and show some code that hopefully will show how great jQuery and ASP.NET AJAX work together. As my first piece of code using both frameworks, I’ve built a very simple plug-in for jQuery that instantiates a specific control on all elements in a jQuery result set. Here’s the full code for the plug-in:jQuery.fn.create = function(type, properties, events) { return this.each(function() { Sys.Component.create(type, properties, events, {}, this); }); };And here’s how you can use it to create instances of a (pretty lame) sample behavior to limits the number of characters in all text inputs with a specific class on them: $(”input[type=text].nomorethantwenty”) .create(Bleroy.Sample.CharCount, { maxLength: 20 }); This is the kind of super-simple code that we hope will make your life easier as an ASP.NET developer. More of that stuff later… I’m super-excited about this. How about you? jQuery快讯—jQuery将与Microsoft and Nokia 合作。
Microsoft
http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/archive/2008/09/28/jquery-and-microsoft.aspx
http://www.hanselman.com/blog/jQueryToShipWithASPNETMVCAndVisualStudio.aspx

[…] jQuery now officially part of the .NET developer’s toolbox Sep.29, 2008 in Javascript You may have read that from John Resig or Scott Guthrie. Here’s the full code for the plug-in:jQuery.fn.create = function(type, properties, events) { return this.each(function() { Sys.Component.create(type, properties, events, {}, this); }); };And here’s how you can use it to create instances of a (pretty lame) sample behavior to limits the number of characters in all text inputs with a specific class on them: $(“input[type=text].nomorethantwenty”) .create(Bleroy.Sample.CharCount, { maxLength: 20 }); This is the kind of super-simple code that we hope will make your life easier as an ASP.NET developer. More of that stuff later… I’m super-excited about this. How about you? The sample code for this post: http://weblogs.asp.net/blogs/bleroy/Samples/jQueryMicrosoftAjax.zip The original announcement by John Resig: http://jquery.com/blog/2008/09/28/jquery-microsoft-nokia/ and Scott Guthrie: http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/archive/2008/09/28/jquery-and-microsoft.aspx And here’s some cool code from Scott Hanselman: http://www.hanselman.com/blog/jQueryToShipWithASPNETMVCAndVisualStudio.aspx And this older post where I show how to use the ScriptManager with jQuery (and without Microsoft Ajax): Using ScriptManager with other frameworks […]

[…] Microsoft The decision by Microsoft to add JQuery to its Visual Studio may seem like no big deal, but it strikes me as evidence we are on the other side of an important tipping point in tech history. The war between business models is over. Open source has won. We are now negotiating terms of the peace treaty. Microsoft believes JQuery enhances the basic Visual Studio product. That’s why they’re using it. At The Universal Desktop, Ryan Stewart says this move, and support for ADO.Net, makes it much easier for Javascript developers to include the Microsoft Data Services stack. That’s what is in this for Microsoft. When Microsoft needs open source software, and open source developers, to retain market share that’s a very big deal. Someone just got embraced and extended, and I think it was Microsoft. This does not mean Microsoft, or Nokia (which has also adopted JQuery), are going away. In the present business environment their cash hordes and market positions are stronger than ever. But on the other side of the crisis it’s an open source world. posted by Dana Blankenhorn September 29, 2008 @ 6:59 am […]

My favorite speaker was Mr. Resig who talked about the State of jQuery and made an announcement that Microsoft will be including jQuery in its .NET distribution and Nokia will be integrating it into their widget development platform. […] jQuery Adds to Visual Studio Scott Guthrie has announced on his blog entry, jQuery and Microsoft, jQuery library will ship as part of Visual Studio. jQuery JavaScript library will be distributed as-is, and without forking or changing the source from the main jQuery branch. The files will continue to use and ship under the existing jQuery MIT license. jQuery is a lightweight open-source JavaScript library that in a relatively short span of time has become one of the most popular libraries on the Web. A big part of the appeal of jQuery is that it allows you to elegantly (and efficiently) find and manipulate HTML elements with minimum lines of code. jQuery will be incoporated into ASP.NET AJAX Control Toolkit and ASP.NET MVC. Code will be distributed with intellisense-annotations that provide great Visual Studio intellisense and help-integration at design-time. For more information, see John Resig’s post on the jQuery team blog. Scott Hanselman wrote up a blog entry, jQuery to ship with ASP.NET MVC and Visual Studio, that shows how to integrate jQuery with ASP.NET AJAX and with ADO.NET Data Services. […] […] I belive that jquery form validation is something that should be put into the core of jQuery UI or other software package that further enhance the UI with jQuery, maybe the integration of jQuery into .NET or jQuery on Zend Framework 1.7 will enable jQuery driven form validation. A couple of weeks ago I started myself to implement an <a href=””http://jform.net”>unobtrusive form validation script</a> named jform, based on jQuery, unfortunately I have not had the time to keep up the work on the script (two kids takes time from writing code in your “spare time”). But as I feel the need for a script that works out of the box without any particular configuration, I will probably start focusing on the script whenever I happens to find an hour or two to spend on the script. I really do think this has potential. I am not going to jump the gun and start praising M$ for appearing to do something smart. I say this because I am skeptical that Microsoft won’t attempt to “embrace, extend and extinguish” - as someone said earlier - since it seems the nature of their beast. John, as I’m sure you know, be careful.
Too bad Zend went with Dojo. But I guess an over-engineered PHP framework deserves and over-engineered Javascript framework. They don’t deserve jQuery.

An example is buying a set of fancy letter blocks, as opposed to ordinary ones. The fancier blocks will obviously be more expensive than the ordinary blocks. However, taking the extra time and effort to personalize those blocks will go over very well with both the parents and the child. Other great examples are books and audio CDs. You can have these items personalized with the child s name inscribed on the packaging. These are small but very thoughtful touches that mean a lot.
Because of the importance of these gifts, people would usually like to present something that shows a lot of care and thought. Nothing does that better than a personalized gift. These things do not really have to have any actual utility. As long as it is beautiful, the item will be more than acceptable as a baby gift. A little superficial, maybe, but that s the reality of our consumption driven world.
Personalized baby gifts what is so great about them? Well, they are only the latest trend in Hollywood. A lot of celebrity mothers are trying to outdo each other in receiving the most lavish and extravagant gifts for their little bundle of joy. Giving gifts is actually a ritual that has existed since the dawn of mankind. But with media hyping all the glamour of celebrity baby showers, giving personalized baby gifts has taken on new dimensions.
